L’Arche Stratford; 50 years of inclusion, $3.8 million raised for “Be Belong Become” Campaign

As Stratford experiences warmer than usual weather for this time of year, it is with a warm heart it closes out the 50th anniversary of L’Arche Stratford with community news and generosity.

L’Arche Stratford and its donors have raised $3.8 million in its “Be Belong Become” campaign, a vision to build a new community property at 426 Britannia Street. L’Arche Stratford, a leader in inclusivity where individuals with and without developmental disabilities share their lives together, embarked on a journey to repurpose the former Montessori School at 426 Britannia, in 2017 but that vision has transformed into a new build to construct an innovative community hub.

In April 2023 L’Arche Stratford was profoundly grateful to receive a generous donation of $1 million from an anonymous donor. The donor motivated the community to support the “Be Become Belong” campaign as the $1 million donation has been successfully matched. Elaine Clark-Siberry, the Campaign Chair, couldn’t contain her excitement, “The outpouring of support from our community has been nothing short of extraordinary! Raising over $2 million in a single year and $3.8 million to date is a testament to the incredible dedication and belief in our mission.”

However, it’s not just about building the property. There is an urgent need in Perth and Huron Counties to deliver Community Participation Support and Housing, with only three per cent of requests filled in 2021-2022.

With the help of the community in Perth and Huron Counties the “Be Belong Become” campaign will help to fill the gap of housing but also double its capacity for Passport Administration, which is an essential service for people with developmental disabilities to receive access to funding for daily activities and opportunity to connect with the community.

Plans to move forward with the next phase of development are well underway with the L’Arche Stratford Board approving the appointment of Feltz Design Build, GB Architect Inc., MTE Engineer, and NFR Engineering Ltd to complete the design and site application and move the project another step forward to realization.

Although L’Arche Stratford is grateful to everyone for their donations, the organization is only 60 per cent to its goal of $6.5 million to build the new hub and remain mortgage free. There will be fundraising initiatives throughout 2024. Getting to the campaign goal would afford L’Arche Stratford the ability to invest in the continued need for housing and growth to support community members in Perth-Huron.
